I have the gear problem with a cool pair of boots I bought that are big enough for two or 3 pairs of socks in winter (forward thinking). I have to turn my foot out the slide it back in as soon as I feel the gear, if I don't I end up with my foot under the crash bar
Takes a bit of practice, but you'll find a way!
