tyre wear ok so I have somehow acquired what is commonly referred to as a chicken strip on me SP1 (I do loadsa commuting of course )thing is, the inner edges of the grooves nearest the centre of the tyre have all but disappeared, and I've no idea whether this means the tyre is fecked or just 'squared orf'. is a baldy 1 1/2" in the centre a write off? dunno whether it makes any difference but its a METZELER3 190/50 ZR17

Re: tyre wear Just had the same problem with michlens on the catHad pilot sports on and they only done about 3k. There was a inch strip in the middle of the tyre right done to the wire. The rest of the tyre was ok but at 100 quid a pop for an inch of rubber i'm ![]() ![]() .Anyway if the small tread wear indicators are still there its still legal but sounds like not alot of life left in it. Sounds like you to will be buying new rubber soon and can recomend to scrafice some grip for a harder longer lasting rubber. How many miles did you get out the metz? .peanut.

Re: tyre wear [quote=peanut;17149How many miles did you get out the metz? .peanut.[/QUOTE] a paltry 3573 miles peanut that's all the bike's done in total.front tyre's also a metz3 but looks as good as new, so I guess if I go for a different compound/make then I'll have to change that one as well ![]()

Re: tyre wear The problem you have Deano is that the SP needs sticky rubber so won't wear too well if you do a lot of straight line stuff. If you change them for something a bit more hard wearing then it could upset the handling and traction. Don't forget it was intended for track use not commuting ![]() BTW a chicken strip is on the outside edge of the tyre - not the middle. Called that because you don't lean round the bends enough ![]()

Re: tyre wear Dual compound is the way to go.. Get the hard bit in the middle, sticky on the edge... You think 3k is bad the standard fitment for the lav are pirelli MTR02's which was the rear was down to the canvas in under 1200 miles, and the front tho still legal, became v twitchy when the tread worn, so was replaced with every second rear... I now run it on bridgestone bt010's... much better, still got the edge grip, but last a lot longer.. Last edited by jonnywombat : 06-24-2008 at 10:27 PM.

Re: tyre wear It's not illegal to change one, the only prob is fitting cross-plys with radials (and that was OK if the radial was on the rear). I'm going to fit the 010 on the front with an 020 on the rear (or equivalent), I've got a big mileage trip planned so this should fit the bill.
