Re: Riding in the rain - suggestions and advice?

I think just about everything's been covered. One thing though is when setting off, it's a LOT LOT easier to spin up the rear in the wet, especially when you're coming out of a T-junction and there's a car coming. Having said that, as long as you ease of gently, you'll get yer traction back.

Allways take time on roundabouts can be a real hazard and also setting off from junctions ive been riding in the wet for years only thing i don't like is when your visor starts fogging up

Re: Riding in the rain - suggestions and advice?

Just to say thanks for creating this thread!

I'll be picking up my first ever bike over the weekend, it's supposed to be pissing it down so I am very nervous, as I've only done my CBT and that was on a gorgeous day! so I'm going to have my first ride home, probably about 40 miles in the rain!

I'm sure I saw a post on here baout a month ago, best way to keep helmet from steaming up is to just lift the visor a little? and maybe I'll just try to stay in the COmmand Position on the road, no dodging all the manhole covers and things, I'll just go sloooooow! I just want to make it home, find a carpark and practice on it for a few hours!

Try wiping a small amount of washing up liquid on th inside of the visor.
Stinks a bit though.
I have also used a 'Foggy Mask' which velcos in the the chin part of the lid. Found it very effective. Most of the big dealers sell them.

Re: Riding in the rain - suggestions and advice?

Just doing a search about riding in the rain and this thread came up, good tips aswell.

I rode to work today for the first time in the wet conditions and I can tell you my behind was a bit tight But the return home was nice and dry, for a change.

It's surprising how much you tighten up in the wet, seems like all you senses are on edge.

Also went out yesterday evening, in the wet, to get some gas, and I did notice some one was leaking diesel in the road, as it was for a while to. So that kept me busy, whilst riding back home.

Cheers

Re: Riding in the rain - suggestions and advice?

Riding in the wet nether bothered me until it contributed to my first (and as yet, only) lowside crash, I think my inexperience helped. I was too overconfident, just ride safe and slow..

Naturally when I dragged myself up off the floor I saw that lovely rainbow pattern all over the road surface - I dropped my glove in a puddle of it too!

As above. Also watch out for metal drain covers, they're lethal when wet. Watch your acceleration, especially when pulling out of T-junctions as it's way too easy to spin the rear wheel. Dress accordingly, being cold and wet really affects your concentration. Enjoy it, providing your kitted out right, it's just as much fun as in the dry!

Re: Riding in the rain - suggestions and advice?

Well the list so far is pretty comprehensive..and all is good advise.

Another "problem area" in the rain is the petrol station. When a forecourt is wet it can be just like a skating rink, esp by the diesel pumps.. so take extra care if filling up in the wet.

I find an alternative to expensive "anti fog" products is humble furniture polish. just spray a bit on the inside of your visor and wipe off.. your good to go and smells a bit better than washing up liquid.

Take it easy, pick your way carefully, ride real smooth and when you get to where your going make sure you can spread your gear out to dry.. Don't go putting your wet gloves in your helmet... they will still be moist later when you come to go out and now the inside of your lid will be damp too..

Also a carrier bag "sock" is a good way of keeping feet dry if your boots start to leak.
