Another sad weekend for Squires

Two bikers killed

Monday 14th July 2008

TWO motorcyclists were killed in separate collisions, on the same road, within half an hour of each other, police said today.

The crashes took place on the B1222, near Sherburn-in-Elmet, in North Yorkshire, yesterday evening.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said the road was often used by bikers, and the collisions were 500 metres apart.

The road was closed for more than five hours after the collisions, while crash scene investigators examined the scene.

The first incident took place at about 5.45pm, and involved a red Honda motorcycle and a silver Mercedes Benz car.

The biker, a man in his 40s, believed to be from the Doncaster area, suffered fatal injuries.

The driver of the Mercedes was treated for minor injuries.

A man was airlifted to hospital after the second collision, which took place at about 6.15pm.

The police spokesman said: "The collision occurred on the same road, between Sherburn-in-Elmet and Newthorpe, close to the Squires café.

"Three motorcycles were turning right, onto Gorse Lane.

"The two leading vehicles had turned right, when the third driver lost control and collided with a stone wall."

The driver was airlifted to hospital by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, but later died.

Re: Another sad weekend for Squires

its a poor road visibility-wise for fast riding, and too many riders think they're better than they are
its more likely they'll introduce some road safety measures than close the cafe, though they may like to move it to the other side of sherburn.

Re: Another sad weekend for Squires

Hope so. I was going to use it as an example for my business plan. Not sure that looks so good now.

Most of the accidents seem to be around rider error and having seen some of them ride passed I'm not surprised. Shame though, it could happen to the best of us on a bad day.

more pertinently though, it could happen to the worst of us on any day. like you say, rider error - but the road ain't very forgiving either from a business plan perspective, you wanna be pitching dead centre of a 2 mile straight!

True, true.

Am off to see Estates man on Friday to beg for permission to use his land. Will let you know what he said. Sounded miserable on the phone.

Re: Another sad weekend for Squires

Getting back to the thread before all the rest of the 'perverts' chip in .....The roads round there are great, but they are twisty with adverse cambers and are uneven which throw you of course. A lot of riders push themselves to the limit, have done it myself, but the visibility is poor with sharp bends and hidden dips and junctions.
Have ridden round there many times and been faced with another biker tearing round the bend on the wrong side of the road. Nearly ended with one on my bonnet when I was out in the car.
It isn't always the bikers fault but some of them ride like complete twats, thinking they are impressing everyone when really everyone thinks they are a w***er.
If everyone slowed down a bit it would be better for everyone.
