Nails in tyres

Hi guys and girls, just a little bit of a question here. Checked my bike this morning before riding to work and i found a nail just off of the centre line, first of all does this mean a new tyre?

Secondly if it doesnt mean a completely new tyre is it better to get plugged or is there some kind of puncture repair solution to put inside the tyre?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Mike

Re: Nails in tyres

Plug it for now, but it would be an idea to take it to a tyre centre and seek their advice......difficult to say without seeing the state of the tyre

Re: Nails in tyres

Morning,

skip the punture repair idea, get it to the shop and see if they can plug it,

I might be a paranoid android but i would get a new tyre, just would not feel safe knowing that the tyre has been compromised and then patched up, at the end of the day, these bad boys are what keep us from eating tarmac, I just like to ride knowing I have a 100% set of tyres under me

just my opinion, feel free to ignore

Gotta go with Togs here, I wouldn't want to take the chance, go for the 100% peace of mind option and get it changed pal...

Re: Nails in tyres

Whoa there, nothing wrong with a repaired tyre, as long as the original puncture hadn't severely damaged the tyre carcass, ie. tyre run flat with a foriegn object in it.
I've had a couple of punctures, one in a brand new tyre (well a week old) I go to a dealer who specialises in superbike tyres and he can tell you if it's repairable or not. Punctures close to, or in the sidewall are unrepairable, but in the centre of the tyre they can be done by plugging and/or a patch on the inside. The only downside for me is knowing that the tyre had been repaired, I didn't like to use the bike at it's limits, but then thats just me.

Re: Nails in tyres

i know that they can be repaired safetly, i even have a kit under my seat incase i need it whilst out, a friend has a repaired rear tyre on his gixxer thou and its been fine, i just wouldnt trust it, i would use it on the sied of the road as a get me home, but i would then replace the tyre the next day, even if it was a new tyre, i mean lets face it tyres are not that expensive, and if a repaired tyre did fail ( ive never heard of a repaired tyre failing) well i dont even want to think about it, everyone has a different opion

Re: Nails in tyres

personally, I'd be guided by expert advice - if the tyre specialist reckons its repairable, I'd go with that.
. . . . unless the tyre was 50% plus worn anyway, in which case (finances permitting) I'd replace it. I'm a wuss though and if I was the type to ride super quick, I might have a different attitude

Re: Nails in tyres

the tyre is brand spanking, been on just over a couple of weeks which is why i was asking the Q about it being plugged i know tyres are relativly in-expensive but after spending £ on a new tyre not long ago you can see why i am reluctant for another new one. I'm going to go visit a tyre specialist and see if i can get it plugged. The tyre itself is still completely inflated/rock solid no signs of slow puncture or leakage and the ride to the specialist is about a 10 min ride so ill get them to have a look. Will just take it easy

On a side note, im sure my next door neighbour is responsible for it this is the 6th nail ive picked up in 3 months (5 in my car) and i rarely go where nails usually are especially on my bike although is there any specific place where nails should or shouldnt be? lol

Thanks for the advice peeps
