Charging road tax per mile. Not sure if this is in the right place but I've just read this link 'Spy-in-the-sky' paves way for road pricing - Telegraph on another forum and thought I should spread the news. I'm not sure how they will apply it to motorcycles but one thing the article doesn't say is that speed cameras will be redundent. They will be able to send your speeding fine out with your monthly bill. On the level of charges, if bikes are charged just a tenth of the figure mooted in the link then 500 miles will see nearly all of us exceeding the present road tax. So if you do approx 4,000 miles a year that will be around £500 road tax!

Re: Charging road tax per mile. It can only happen if we let it, if all road users sit back on their arses then it will certainly happen.

Re: Charging road tax per mile. this country is a joke, they want vehicles off the road so they will continue to rip off the average motorist until the only people who can afford to drive will be the rich, i used to do a lot of work in america, they call this country treasure island, because of the amount of cash the goverment take from us

Re: Charging road tax per mile. The following is pure speculation but which route do you think 'the government of the day' would take? The year is 2020 Scenario 1: Petrol and road usage charges have become so expensive that only the super rich can afford cars or bikes. The general public is forced to walk or use an over burdened public transport service. Scenario 2: Nothing much has changed from 2008. The roads are as busy as ever. Then the government announces fuel supplies have nearly run out and fuel is being reserved for essential services and all personal vehicles are banned (except for the super rich who can get around it). Which scenario would lead to riots and civil unrest? (Bio fuel? Nowhere near enough will be grown. Hence 'essential services only' will get it all.) I hope I'm just having a bad dream but...................

Re: Charging road tax per mile. i think number 2, the roads will be worse than now, fuel will be even more expensive as will road tax, they will have bought in another motorist based tax, more towns and citys will have charging systems for entering them and they will be either thinking of more road tolled roads or building them
