Kids as pillion passengers

My lad is desperate to get on the back of my CBR600.

He is 8 years old and desperately wants his own helmet and gear so he can come riding with me.

However i'm a bit concerned about taking an 8 year old out and about on the back. He's sat on the back of the 125 for a quick trip down the drive but not further.

The law (i believe) says you can carry a pillion passenger if they can reach the rear foot pegs - is this correct?

Anyone else had experience of carrying kids as pillion?

Recommendations? comments?

Re: Kids as pillion passengers

I have had my lad glued to the back of my bike since he was 9 - he's nearly 14 now. I always made him wear ALL the protective gear and always had a top box on so I knew he couldn't fall off without me knowing. The CBR 600 is a bit more extreme than the Blackbird so I would see if I could borrow some gear for him and give him a bit of a trial run. Its no good spending a fortune if he doesn't take to it mate.

This is what the Highway Code says 83-88: Rules for motorcyclists : Directgov - Travel and transport

83
On all journeys, the rider and pillion passenger on a motorcycle, scooter or moped MUST wear a protective helmet. This does not apply to a follower of the Sikh religion while wearing a turban. Helmets MUST comply with the Regulations and they MUST be fastened securely. Riders and passengers of motor tricycles and quadricycles, also called quadbikes, should also wear a protective helmet. Before each journey check that your helmet visor is clean and in good condition.
[Laws RTA 1988 sects 16 & 17 & MC(PH)R as amended reg 4]

85
You MUST NOT carry more than one pillion passenger who MUST sit astride the machine on a proper seat. They should face forward with both feet on the footrests. You MUST NOT carry a pillion passenger unless your motor cycle is designed to do so. Provisional licence holders MUST NOT carry a pillion passenger.
[Laws RTA 1988 sect 23, MV(DL)R 1999 reg 16(6) & CUR 1986 reg 102]
