Arrest after motorbike hits crowd - Aberdeen

A 17-year-old has been arrested following an incident involving a motor bike in which nine people, including several children, were injured.

A motorcycle mounted a pavement and collided with pedestrians in Aberdeen.

Police said more than one person was travelling on the bike when it appeared to lose control in Union Street.

It happened at about 2030 BST on Saturday during the city's Torcher Parade, an annual student fund-raising event in the city centre.

The casualties were taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment.

A spokesman said none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The casualties included a 40-year-old woman who sustained a leg injury. A 25-year-old man who had injuries to his face and hand.

Leg injuries

Two 17-year-old men were injured, one with leg and chest injuries, and the other with leg and hand injuries.

Two 13-year-old girls, a 13-year-old boy and a 11-year-old boy all suffered leg injuries and another 11-year-old boy was treated for shock.

A statement issued by Grampian Police said: "Officers refrained from immediate pursuit due to the high volume of pedestrians and the constraints of the urban environment.

"It was decided that the risks involved in pursuing the motorcycle far outweighed the risks posed by the motorcycle and rider."

Bystanders said they heard screams as the bike ran into pedestrians.

Hundreds of people gathered to watch the event in which Aberdeen students get dressed up and take to the city's streets every year for the Torcher Parade, which raises money for charity.

The parade draws large crowds from all over the North East of Scotland.

Union Street was closed as police and the emergency services were trying to clear the area and re-route the parade.

Anyone with information about the incident is being urged to contact police.
