Young drivers 'should take a year before attaining licence'

People looking to gain a driving licence should have to take lessons for at least a year before picking one up, according to a motoring organisation.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has claimed that a 12-month period in which classes are taken should be compulsory before drivers are permitted to use highways.

Such a change in the law could see people more prepared for the trials of the road, potentially resulting in a drop in the number of accidents and people making fewer car and bike insurance policy claims.

According to ABI spokesperson Malcolm Tarling, the organisation is working hard to lobby officials and get the law changed.

"What we'd like to see is young drivers getting more experience before they actually sit their driving test, rather than taking their driving test and then, in effect, learning to drive," the official commented.

This comes as the ABI recently warned against the dangers of driving while using a mobile phone.

According to the group, such problems are "very clear".

In addition, drivers can pick up a £60 fine and three-point licence penalty for being convicted of the crime.

Re: Young drivers 'should take a year before attaining licence'

looking at the standard of young drivers makes me agree with most of that, but(theres always a but) how many young people can afford to pay for a whole years training? its unfair to suggest that all youngsters are maniacs behind the wheel of a car, so wouldnt it make more sense to limit the type/speed/size/power of car they are allowed after passing the test as normal?

Personally Sam, I think it's part of a long term secret stratergy to reduce the ammount of traffic on the roads, there's no more country side to make into roads and motorways, we've run out of room. Only solution is to run peeps off the roads.

Up the price of fuel - that will get rid of some motorists, then the 3rd European Driving Licence Directive which will see off younger bikers and now this!!
