An army of around 400 bikers took part in a protest ride-out at the weekend against Barrow’s test centre closure.
Around 400 bikers from across the UK took part in the ride-out, which was organised by Millom Bike Group and Ulverston and District Motorcycle Club.
The protesters set off from Barrow’s DSA test centre, Trinity Enterprise Centre in Ironworks Road, and travelled to the proposed test centre site in Carlisle, a distance of more than 100 miles.
Edmund Chambers, treasurer of Millom Bike Group, said: “It was absolutely wonderful. Around 500 people turned out to show their support. Not all of them lasted the entire ride-out, but there were still around 400 people who completed the full ride.
“The campaign has been going well so far and this turn-out was marvellous.
“We had around 27 learner riders who joined the ride-out. By the end of it, they were absolutely exhausted.
“One of the learners even became ill half way through the journey. The reaction from the learners was what we set out to prove – that this journey to the centre leaves them tired, and it is unfair to ask them to take their test after it.”
Furness MP John Hutton recently joined the battle to save the test centre, and is now working with the DSA to find an alternative to the Carlisle centre.
