Campaign to reduce bike deaths

A new campaign has been launched by the emergency services in a bid to cut the number of motorcyclists killed or seriously injured in crashes on Shropshire roads.

It is particularly focusing on the Bridgnorth area, which is believed to have suffered more biker deaths in the last year than anywhere else in the UK.

Dozens of yellow posters with the message “Think Bike! Look Twice” have been put up along the A442 Bridgnorth to Telford road, the A458 Bridgnorth to Stourbridge road and the A454 Bridgnorth to Wolverhampton.

The roads around the town have seen 10 fatal accidents in the last year - five of which have involved motorcycles.

In the latest incident, a female biker had to be airlifted to the Princess Royal Hospital, Telford, last Saturday with neck and back injuries, when she collided with a car on the A454 near Swancote Country Club.

A series of lay-bys have been built along the A458 and the A454 in recent weeks where police can put up mobile speed cameras to target speeding drivers.

The campaign will be taking its message to Bridgnorth by attending bike meets to educate riders and pillions and make them more aware of the consequences of dangerous riding. The next event they will attend will be at Swancote Country Club on May 21.

The scheme is part of the Safer Roads Partnership which is made up of a number of key organisations, including West Mercia Police, Shropshire Fire & Rescue and local councils.

Vicki Bristow, the partnership’s communications manager, said: “This campaign is aiming to make motorcyclists and car users more aware of the risks that are present when they are out on the county’s roads.”
