Fulwood police warn of bike thefts

Motorbike insurance customers are being warned about the security of their possessions following a spate of thefts in the Fulwood area.

Seven mopeds, scooters and small motorbikes have been stolen in recent weeks, with more than half of these going missing in the Brookfield estate, the Preston Citizen reports.

Most of the thefts occurred at night time, with perpetrators abandoning the bikes after taking them for a joyride in the local area, police said.

It would seem the offenders are cutting through chains and padlocks of bikes secured in front gardens and on driveways.

Fulwood Police's Inspector June Chessell told the Preston Citizen police are writing to individuals who own mopeds, scooters and small motorbikes to offer them security advice.

She added that such motorbike owners should "do everything possible" to ensure their vehicles are secure.

Inspector Chessell suggested that where possible, motorbikes should be placed in a secure shed or garage to minimise theft risk.

According to the Home Office, scooters, mopeds and smaller-engine motorbikes are most at risk of motorcycle theft. Newer bikes are also more attractive to thieves.

The Home Office warns that unsecured motorbikes are an easy target as such vehicles can be easily wheeled away or loaded into a van.
