Credit crunch 'not significantly affecting motorbike sales'

Sales of motorbikes are holding up well despite the credit crunch affecting people's finances, it has been claimed.

Figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCIA) show that some 14,897 motorcycles, mopeds and scooters were officially registered in June.

This is 154 behind the number recorded in May and represents only a one per cent fall.

It added that the UK car market by comparison fell by over six per cent in the same period.

As motorcycle sales are holding up, it may be that policy sales also stay consistent over the coming months, as people look to get their vehicles insured.

Craig Carey-Clinch, MCIA spokesperson, remarked that people could be ditching cars.

He said: "The upward trend of multi-use bikes and smaller-engined machines could well indicate that people are thinking about alternatives to cars and public transport, especially for the daily commute."

This comes as the Loughborough Echo has reported that police in the region have cracked down on rogue motorbike users.

According to the news source, 14 vehicles were confiscated from dangerous drivers and crushed this week.
