Re: Police Pursuit results in biker death Police suspended after motorcyclist is killed during hour-long 'Blues Brothers' car chase Eight policeman have been suspended from driving duties after a motorcyclist was killed during a 'Blues Brothers' -style 50-mile car chase that involved eight patrol cars and at least one helicopter. Alan Long, 54 was involved in a collision with a car during the hour-long chase in Denton, Manchester after he had refused to stop when asked by police. He suffered a broken pelvis and died in hospital several hours later. Today a major disciplinary inquiry was underway over claims officers in the Greater Manchester Police control room had urged the police to call off the chase - only for their pleas to be apparently ignored. The eight officers have been suspended from driving duties whilst inquiries continue to establish whether proper police procedures were followed. One police source said: 'Senior officers are absolutely fuming about this. Some are wondering why a convoy of squad cars plus the force aircraft had to be scrambled to chase a motorcyclist. 'The pursuit went on for the best part of an hour. It sounds like a scene from the Blues Brothers - except this incident ended with the death of a man.' The accident took place on Friday night as Long was taking his motorbike out for a spin just four days before his 55th birthday. Officers on patrol on Whittle Street in Denton spotted him at 11pm and signalled for him to stop because they wanted to see his documents. But Long refused to stop and instead sped off and a chase began. The pursuing police were then joined by a colleagues who followed in convoy with blue lights flashing and sirens blaring. The force's air support unit was also called out to help in the chase which continued for around 50 miles. The father-of-five, from Denton, had 13 grandchildren and was described as a 'passionate biker'. His wife Julie, 49, said: 'Alan was a man who lived life to the full. He was a loving husband, a father of five with 13 grandchildren. 'He had a passion for motorcycles and will be missed a great deal by all his family and friends. ' Long was the 25th person killed in six years on Greater Manchester roads in incidents involving Greater Manchester Police vehicles - one of the worst records in the country. Greater Manchester Police's Professional Standards Department has been informed and has launched an investigation. The case was also referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. At least one of the police vehicles was an unmarked car from the Greater Manchester Police Traffic Vehicle Crime Unit. Assistant Chief Constable Ian Hopkins of Greater Manchester Police said: 'GMP can confirm that eight police officers have had their driving authority withdrawn as the result of an investigation into a fatal collision on Friday 1 August 2008 where a motorcyclist died.' The IPCC published a study on police accidents last year and chairman Nick Hardwick said they believed bike pursuits 'can be particularly dangerous as the rider is much more vulnerable' than a car driver. He added: 'We recommend these pursuits should be limited to instances where serious crime has been committed.' this article dailymail original article in 1st post news bbc

Re: Police Pursuit results in biker death It's hard to see why the biker didn't stop. Was he over the limit? Had he commited a serious crime before the chase? The lesson to learn here is that if you're requested to stop, then stop! Most chases I see on Roadwars etc, I'd prefer the police to be more aggresive with their attempts to stop vehicles, USA style. If they'd move immediately to stop runaways, by P.I.T. ing them, or in this case, nudging the biker off at slower speeds, then maybe there'd be less serious injuries.

Re: Police Pursuit results in biker death To be honest, there was a copter above, they could have left the biker on the ground, he will think he has got away, and eventually he will stop for one reason or another. They should have waited until he went home parking up and then...BUSTED. Rob

Re: Police Pursuit results in biker death Hi , i know about this , my window is overlooking the accident scene , there was 7 Traffic cars chasing him , they were too close , he paniked , went through the red light and hit a VW Polo driven by an 18 year old , he flew over the bonet and hit a traffic light post , which resulted in his broken pelvis . Police officers were immediatly behind him , it took 25 minutes for an ambulance to appear , then two came at once . The police seemed dis-interested in Alan Long , while he was on the floor screaming in agony , he was wriggling around trying to get up , and not one of the 8-10 officers on the scene attempted to keep him calm and stable , it was down to 2 members of the public to take initiative , but it was way too late . I was disgusted with what i saw and contacted our local newspaper . I hope those Policemen never return to duty becaue we dont need that happening , he may not of survived anyway but he sure deserved the chance to find out , No matter what crime was committed , and as far as i can gather it wasnt over much !
