| Gordon Brown meets KillSpills riders KillSpills annual ride around London, highlighting the risk of diesel spillage to motorcyclists, took place last weekend.
The idea for this year’s event was to show Prime Minister Gordon Brown their latest progress, which includes revisions to the Highway Code highlighting the dangers of spilt diesel.
They have also obtained funding from the Department for Transport for 20,000 leaflets. The Highways Agency has also launched their own diesel spill message aimed at hauliers.
KillSpills Team Leader and Founder, Stephen Edwards said: “This year it was not a protest demonstration, it was a celebration of the achievements we have made and a thank you to our supporters, including the motorcyclists of the Metropolitan Police. This way we were also able to promote motorcyclists as caring and responsible road users, an aim close to the KillSpills team’s heart.”
Tourists waiting for the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace as the 100 bikes on the ride passed caught their attention on the way to Downing Street.
Edwards added: “The tourists all turned towards us. It was just a sea of faces. Everyone was waving, clapping and cheering and when we stopped on Constitution Hill next to Buckingham Palace, tourists were posing by the bikes for photos – it was amazing.
This year’s ride, the fifth of its kind, was by invitation only where 100 riders were asked to take part. After delivering their progress report to Prime Minister Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street, the rideout continued up to the BMF Tail End Show in Peterborough where they did a lap of humour in the main arena.
