| "Nuisance" Mini motos not covered by insurance claim Mini motos are a "nuisance" and most are not covered by motorcycle insurance, it has been claimed.
South Tyneside councillor Barrie Scorer said that mini motos are "like a loaded gun to a child", the Shields Gazette reports.
Speaking at a Jarrow community area forum last week, Mr Scorer said that if someone is injured by such bikes, "there's a good chance the vehicle will not be insured".
"They are a nuisance and a weapon, but some people will be giving them as presents this Christmas," he remarked.
According to the newspaper, the councillor's stance on the bikes has drawn criticism from some, but he said that police operations launched to tackle the illegal use of the vehicles ought to be supported.
Police community support officer Paul Shepherd, from Morcambe's Westgate Neighbourhood Policing Team, recently warned that mini motos cannot be used on the roads unless they have insurance, are taxed and are fully registered, the Lancashire Evening Post reports.
Those caught riding them illegally risk having their bike confiscated, while repeat offenders will have their vehicle "taken away", he remarked.
Mini motos can only be used on private land if the landowner has granted permission, he added
