Emission-free race at TT 2009

A version of the electric Brammo bike is expected to take part in the race

The 2009 Isle of Man TT will include the world's first ever emission-free Grand Prix.

The Time Trials Xtreme Grand Prix (TTXGP), which is the is the brainchild of London-based businessman Azhar Hussain, will take place on 12 June.

The event is expected to involve racing teams which are backed by high-tech institutions, international corporations and universities.

Hussain told BBC Isle of Man: "We're about to make history."

He added: "Although this is a radical departure from conventional racing, the TTXGP is a stand-alone race and a concept which encapsulates the spirit of the traditional Isle of Man TT."

The race will follow the Honda 50th anniversary parade lap.

Re: Emission-free race at TT 2009

There's a big article about it in this months Bike Magazine.
It's focussed on fuel cells and electric motors.
There will be 2 classes, Pro class for money no object, corporation backed test-beds and Amateur class, with a £30,000 max budget.
Over 60 teams have registered interest so far.... the magazine goes on to say
Quote:
The great thing about electric motors is that they can deliver 100% of their torque pretty much all of the time - we expect the teams will have to restrict their bikes to stop them flipping. We've estimated lap speeds in the 80-90mph range, with peaks of over 100mph.
Personally I'll be watching this with interest, as I like all things mechanical. Obviously there will be fun watching some of the contraptions but I reckon some of them will be fantastic machines with great potential for the road.
As long as you dont go doing stuff like this....
