Daily 140mph on A21 biker caught by police

Police slam 144mph biker

Police have condemned a motorcyclist caught driving at more than 140mph in East Sussex.
Michael Collins, 22, from Beckenham, Kent, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at Crawley Magistrates' Court last week.

He was sentenced to a two-year suspended prison term and banned from the road for two years.

Collins was arrested following complaints from residents in Hastings and drivers on the A21 who reported a biker riding dangerously at high speed on a daily basis.

Inspector Marc Clothier, of the Sussex Road Policing Unit, said his driving was "wholly unacceptable".

He added the force would deal robustly with anyone committing this type of crime.

"We will not tolerate this behaviour and we have the ability and resources to deal with these riders," he said.

UP-DATE

Quote:
‘Cops let me refuel during chase,’ says 140mph speeder

The biker followed for miles by an unmarked police bike at up to 140mph has told how cops allowed him to refuel before continuing the chase.

Police followed Michael Collins, 22, for 40 minutes to ‘gather evidence’. When he stopped to fill up, an officer in plain leathers on a silver Honda Fireblade simply waited further along the road.

Collins claims he only went so fast because the unknown rider was following so closely he feared he would be rear-ended.

He said: “He was obviously trying to be very, very close to me so I was a bit wary of that. He looked a bit sketchy and I didn’t particularly want him that close to me.

“If you’re riding a bike and someone is there with you going just as fast, of course it makes you go faster. I’m not going to paint a perfect picture of myself and say that I would only ride at 30mph at every other time but he certainly encouraged me to go a bit faster, mainly because when I made overtakes I could see that he was quite desperate to make them as well.

"I was a bit concerned that he may crash into me to be honest."

Re: 144mph biker pleaded guilty to dangerous driving

40 mins and a refuel ?
Jesus, they surely had enough evidence after 2 mins of following, let alone 40.
Seems to be yet another waste of resources / jolly for the police riders to me.
Mind you, he obviously knew he was there and if someone was following me closely for over 5 mins, I'd sure as hell pull over to find out what their game was, I'd also be paranoid that it was a cop anyway.

I nearly added entrapment to my list, but if he was daft enough to ride like that through traffic with the cop following closely, then he deserves to have his collar felt, although I do think 2 years for a ban is overly excessive. Like I said earlier, you hear of footballers / celebrities doing similar speeds in their Astons etc.. and only getting 14 day bans etc, coming up with lame excuses like they needed a piss or something.

I remember this one, as it happened just up the road from me.

TV's Ant McPartlin has been banned from driving for 30 days after being caught speeding.
Ant, who's one half of award-winning duo Ant and Dec, was spotted by police doing 127mph on the A1(M) motorway back in July.
The legal speed limit was just 70mph! Ant, 27, who pleaded guilty at a court in Chester-le-Street, also got a £350 fine.
"It was silly and I have learnt my lesson," Ant told The Sun newspaper. "It was a one-off and I have no complaints with the ban."
I think he took a holiday while he served the ban. And for the people who say "it was a one-off" when they get done ...... yeah right.
