Rear-facing average-speed cameras close to gaining approval

Rear-facing average-speed cameras on the way

Rear-facing cameras which measure average speed over long distances are close to gaining approval, according to the makers.

Existing average-speed cameras are unable to read motorcycles’ number plates because they are forward-facing but the latest generation can also face the rear, the manufacturers told a road safety conference.

They are likely to be installed on rural and urban roads, covering large areas of towns and cities.

Geoff Collins of Speed Check Services said he hoped to gain government approval for the cameras by January. He said 35 local authorities had already expressed interest.

Roads minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: “Wherever there are average-speed camera signs, traffic moves at a uniform speed and crashes reduce.”

I don't have a problem with speed cameras in general if they are used in appropriate places, but I do prefer these average speed type ones - at least people drive at a sensible speed throughout rather that blast up to them, brake sharply, then b**ger off again.
