| £260 + 6 points for 20 year old caught doing 102mph A BIKER who was caught on a High Peak road travelling at more than double the speed limit has escaped a driving ban.
Kai Thomas Burkitt, 20, exceeded the 50mph limit along a stretch of the A5004 Long Hill on July 20, High Peak Magistrates' Court heard.
Prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald said: "At around 11am, the police officer saw the defendant riding a Kawasaki 600 bike.Using a laser device, he recorded his speed at 102mph."
Pleading guilty to speeding, Burkitt described the offence as "a moment of madness".
"I admit I was doing 102mph. I didn't know I was going that fast until the officer told me," he said.
Burkitt also pleaded with the court not to disqualify him, saying he was currently working as a highly-regarded apprentice engineer for BAE Systems, and needed his car to commute.
He added: "This offence was totally out of character. I have since sold the motorbike and want nothing more to do with it."
Chairman of the Bench Geoffrey Dennis said: "Roads in this locality, because of the nature of them, can potentially be extremely dangerous.
"You were doing 102mph which was an exceptionally high speed, and you quite rightly describe this as a moment of madness. The policemen who stopped you probably saved your life.
"We are not going to disqualify you, but do not think we are in any way minimising the gravity of this offence."
Burkitt, of Kings Road, Hazel Grove, was fined £210 and ordered to pay £35 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. His licence was endorsed with six penalty points.
