| Re: Gloucestershire police to loan new locks to bikers "Riders are allowed to borrow the locks and use the facility as long as they can provide positive proof of their identity." Huh?? ![]() ![]() Sounds to me like a means to get the names and addresses of all bikers in the area. Just why would someone ask for a bike lock from plod for a bike they didn't own or a bike they had stolen? I suspect this is just an 'excuse' to run people through the ANPR and PNC system. |

| Re: Gloucestershire police to loan new locks to bikers Yeah there is. Repeated PNC checks usually result in unwanted attention from the police. It's just another way of stealth monitoring of us all which I'm totally against. I'm a law abiding citizen and so should be free to go about my business without hindrance or question. We're already "caught" on CCTV up to 300 times a day in many shopping and city centers, and most towns/city's that are "with it" have the ANPR system linked to their CCTV anyway. So in my area, when I go into York, Harrogate, Scarborough, Leeds, Malton, Pickering, Hull, Hornsea and surrounding areas that have CCTV my plate is captured and run through the ANPR system as is everyone else's. OK so the good side to this is it will eventually rid the roads of the idiots who don't ride/drive legally but the bad side to this is that computers don't screw up, it's the end user, (the operator), who makes the mistake when inputting details. How many times have we heard of DVLA missing entitlements from renewed licence's? There was a couple in the paper the other day who were told to leave an Asda petrol station as their car reg number came up as a persistent petrol thief. My point is, every time someone inputs someones details into the system it increases the chances of a mistake being made. At least with the ANPR system a vehicle is only flagged if there is a problem with it, otherwise it's simply a cross reference check done automatically by a computer without the need for human input unless something comes to light. It's like the other week, I went to pick up the wife from work and happened across trees that had been blown onto the road in the wind. Myself and 3 other drivers cleared the road but there was still a lot of crap all over the road which would have present as a danger to bikers. So, being the responsible person I am, I rang the police to inform them of this and I was asked my name and address for "their records" I've since found that my details were run through the PNC to see if there was anything outstanding against my name. |

| Re: Gloucestershire police to loan new locks to bikers Seems like a good idea to me, turn up in town, borrow a lock while you go about your business and give it back later. There's no way I could carry my lock and chain safely on my bike. Wober if it's like the big carpark in York (not sure what it's called but can drive straight to it ), that one has posts with in built chains, so all you need is your own padlock. Top idea. |

| Re: Gloucestershire police to loan new locks to bikers I think your making a mountain out of a mole hill. There loaning out bike locks ffs coz it's saves them time, paperwork etc etc from trying to recover the stolen bikes ![]() and just as a by-the-by you even have to produce proof of identity to get a fecking book out of the library ![]() |

| Re: Gloucestershire police to loan new locks to bikers Backpack's too awkward on my leathers as they have a race hump. Plus my chains a great hefty thing. Besides, I have nothing to hide and even if they did run me through the computer, I'd be more than happy if it meant peace of mind parking my bike up. |

| Re: Gloucestershire police to loan new locks to bikers I'm not at all, I don't agree with private, law abiding citizens being monitored. If you want to be bar coded, stamped, tattooed and a tracking device shoved where the sun don't shine then go for it girl. Personally I'll opt out. Quote:
On that basis you're seen riding in, you're seen when you return and your reg number can be noted when you put the lock on the bike so nicking it would be pointless wouldn't it? And the library analogy is really weak since I would assume the option of taking the lock home to use again isn't an option. | |
