Scott Redding shortlisted for top BBC award

British 125GP sensation Scott Redding has made the shortlist for the coveted BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award.

The 15-year-old, who created history in June when his stunning victory in the British GP at Donington Park made him the youngest rider ever to win a Grand Prix, made a shortlist of ten of Britain’s top young sport stars.

Redding is up against four Olympians and Laura Robson, the 14-year-old who became the first Briton to win a junior Wimbledon singles title since 1984. Diving star Tom Daley, who won in 2007, is also on the shortlist.

The judging panel, chaired by BBC Sport presenter John Inverdale, met on Monday to decide on the shortlist of 10.

The panel will now meet again on November 24 to reduce the final 10 down to just three, with the winner announced live on the BBC at the prestigious awards ceremony in Liverpool on December 14.

Previous winners include Premiership football stars Theo Walcott and Wayne Rooney and tennis star Andy Murray.

Inverdale told the BBC Sport website: “I've been involved since the award's inaugural year in 2001. This year we've got the highest quality of contenders across the board I've ever known, in my opinion.

"You are looking at people at the top of their trees, and we have left a lot of strong nominations out of the top 10 and we will now have to leave seven out."

His saving grace may be Lewis Hamilton, and the media bandwagon that's surrounding motorsport at the moment. They won't like to let a future champ go unnoticed. Best of luck Scott.

Re: British 125GP Scott Redding shortlisted for top BBC award

I'd love to think that Scott would win this award as I truly believe he deserves it.
IMO he is Britains best hope in his class for a futre World Title.

Another Rossi? Maybe but I doubt it, although I do think he's destined for great things.

That said, wasn't there a youngster in the Olympics that won a Gold medal?

The Olympics being televised to a greater audience (especially more than 125GP) might swing it.
