Didn't see anything wrong with it myself - that's exactly how I was taught to ride and it works for me. The idea of getting wide on the bends is to give you best possible view, ergo advance warning of oncoming traffic, which is when you 'sacrifice your position' for safety (if you are by the white line).
A 'flexible' gear is one where you can maintain steady acceleration, but have more available should you need it and engine braking if you lift off (ie keeping in the mid rev range)
The only thing I would disagree with is the slowing down without use of brake lights - when you are riding a v-twin, lifting off the throttle has the same effect as throwing an anchor off the back of the bike (any Harley riders will know what I mean), so might be a tad disconcerting for following traffic if you slowed down without a visible warning - ie the brake light. Even if you don't need to apply the brake, just squeeze the lever enough to activate the light - don't forget that the brake light is just as much of a signal of your intentions as a right or left indicator.
