| 1968 datona I bourght a triumph 500 t100s the v5 said, but close inspection reveald i had a bit of a woof in sheeps clothing. the engin no match the frame no so thats a good start. the engine no. also claims its a t100t. high lift cams, big valves, twin carbs, hmm closer inspection reveals a single carb on a daytona engine, often done to simplify setting up. well it just had to have twin carbs. after long talks with the wife and securing funding for some £400.00 I obtained two brand new Amal concentrics and manifolds gasket set, o rings and so on. ashort time in the cabin and a daytona is born again. These buties would rev to 10,000 and were reported to achieve 105mph. I had too try it. well after a few attempts at getting the carbs balanced. fingers in the air inlets to feel the slides lift at the same time did the trick. and the speedo drive gave up at 80mph. back to the garage and procure a new speedo drive. try again. well I wasnt couragous enough to do the ton on the old lady but a clocked 90 probably equating to a true speed of around 80 was good enough to tell me there was more to come, but then disaster a big oil leak from the head. the weakness of the datona engine is those big exhaust valves. theres very little metal between them and the stud whole. they crack under the strain of it all, and this is what happened. so the search for a new head is on but of corse it must be a datona to keep the bike right. in the mean time the head has been shiped of to cylinda head services in Moulton Northampton shire to see if they can work some magic with the wealder. £300.00 is the quote. |
