Help - dead bike

Please help!
Riding home from work yesterday and the bike died on me. I was blatting down the dual carriageway when had to throttle off / brake for speed camera. This caused the engine revs to plummet so i pulled over. The bike was still ticking over, but was rough as a badgers arse - would not rev and rev counter flicking all over the place. I killed the engine then tried to start again - nothing, dead as a dodo.
Break down fella arrived and bike fired up with the help of his power pack. However, would still not rev, rev counter flicking arpound again

So, got home and charged the battery all night. Engine will not turn over, just makes clicking and buzzing noise.
I'm guessing rectifier / regulator but surely it should turn over with charged battery?

Any advice much appreciated. Cheers

Re: Help - dead bike

A bit more info would be usefull. What sort of bike is it? What style battery does it have?
If it's one of the sealed units they can actually fail with the engine running & produce the symptoms you describe. Try attaching a jump start battery to it & see what happens. If it starts easily & revs freely then chances are you've found your problem
You may also want to check your charging rate just to be sure

Re: Help - dead bike

the rev counter flicking is a yamaha tell tale that there is a problem with the engine/ecu - should do it when you turn on ignition, should go from zero to 5k rpm? and back several times and then stop

Tried Saunders in Knebworth? I used to live in Stevenage and bought all my Yamahas from there, including an SZR!

yamaha szr660 innit?

first i'd check the battery is actually not goosed, they can just fail! sounds like if you put a good battery on all may be cured? or perhaps a loose connection somewhere?

Sounds like a dodgy connection somewhere. I had a similar problem with my divvy. Tacho would go up to 2k when starter button pressed but wouldn't start 5 times out of six. When it started it just wouldn't pull and stalled (especially if I used any other electrical item such as horn). Turned out the starter wiring circuit was corroded through in three places.

Re: Help - dead bike

Thanks for the advice - hopefully its a dead battery! Just checked and it is a sealed unit battery. The bike is a Yamaha SZR 660 and I'm praying its not the ECU (sounds expensive)! Can't face taking it to a garage as last time I had an electrical problem on a Gamma they charged me well over £100 only for the thing to go t#ts up again 20 minutes down the road! "Bring it back and we'll charge you another £100 to replace something else!!" Although I should add that it was not Saunders.
The breakdown guy fired it up (the szr) on a power pack, but it still ran like a pig (maybe its got swine flu ho, ho).
Guess I'll be fiddling about with the wires at the weekend then!
Cheers, Walter
