Hornet back wheel

A while ago my back wheel kept losing air so I took it in to the garage and they said it was leaking round the rim but they'd repaired it and it should be ok.
Recently it's at it again (after only a few weeks)..I checked the tyres last Thursday night before leaving for the rally and the back one was down. Pumped it up to right pressure (42 in the manual) and by today (Tuesday) it was down to 25. I knew it was down as the bike was drifting a bit but that's a lot of air to lose in only a few days.
Is it worth me getting the wheel looked at again or is it going to be more cost effective to replace the wheel? If so how much am I looking at? I know there are some 2nd hand ones on ebay etc but are they a good buy or is new better?
The bike is T-reg with 20,000 miles on so if they are the original wheels will they be about knackered? (It has not had an easy life either from what I gather.)

Re: Hornet back wheel

don't wanna insult a fellow poo freak (joking of course ) but are you sure it ain't a slow puncture or leaky valve? did you pay for the rim repair and is the repair guaranteed?
if its the rim again and it ain't warranted, then a 2nd hand wheel should be ok IMO

Re: Hornet back wheel

They told me the valve was fine and there were no punctures on it but it's clearly not right. Not sure if it was guaranteed but I did pay for it. Will ask Mr LC if he kept the receipt.
Am just a bit worried that it'll blow out if I keep riding it while its going down. Will pumping it up before every ride keep the tyre undamaged?
And don't worry about insulting me...I know nowt about the technicalities and Mr LC's not here to ask.
How much do you think I'll pay for a wheel 2nd hand?
(And remember...it's poo-PHOBIC...not poo-freak. Don't tar me with your brush Dodgy-Deano! )

Re: Hornet back wheel

I wouldn't worry too much about buying a rear wheel secondhand as most bikes suffer damage to the front and not the back.

Re: Hornet back wheel

I just checked ebay & found an immaculate front wheel for 50 odd quid - and a '7 outta 10' rear wheel with a shot tyre for a sarting bid of 135 quid, with 4 days to go
now that is feckin expensive however, I'd not be tempted to ride far on a dodgy rim Lady C.

spotted a nice keyfob for under 3 quid tho

Hmmmm I find a key fob doesn't hold the road so well
Oh well, I'll have to postpone my streetfightering of the hornet so I can spend the dosh on a wheel instead. Bugger it
Supposed to be going to Scotland this weekend too...will have to lock the baby up and go on the back of Mr LC unless I can get it fixed pretty quick. Double bugger it

Re: Hornet back wheel

Corrosion on the face where the tyre sits on the rim is in my experience the main reason for slow air pressure loss.
It is easy to determine this by spraying a strong mix of washing up liquid and water on the join of the tyre and rim. If bubbles appear you need to mark the spots, take the tyre off and polish the face where the leaks are occuring.
(It may be possible on SOME bikes to quite legally put a tube in the wheel if the problem persists.)

Re: Hornet back wheel

Thanks for the advice...turned out it was the tyre that was knackered and the wheel's ok. The tyre had been repaired before apparently and had finally given up. So not too bad really; spent the weekend wearing it in on the way to scotland.
