Blackbird battery boiled

Went for a good run out today to Knott End nr Fleetwood. Had a great day glorious sunshine but on the way home there was a huge tailback on the M55 and as I braked for it (not heavily) my back wheel skidded slightly. This was a bit odd because it has linked brakes and I never use the back brake so only one piston works on the rear to sort of balance the brakes out a little.

When I got home I had a quick look to see if there was anything obvious and it seems that the battery boiled over somehow and spewed acid all over the rear of the engine, suspension and my back tyre. Its etched the paintwork on the engine and marked all the aluminium parts. To say that I'm sick as f*ck would be the understatement of the f*ckin year .

I need a few answers if anyone has them please.
  1. What type of paint do I need for the engine block? It's black and looks like a sort of dull eggshell finish compared to the engine cases.
  2. Does anyone know the procedure for checking the rectifier? This looks to be the likely problem but I would like to check it before I shell out any cash
  3. Should I strip the rear suspension linkages down to inspect them (big job on the BB) or just give them a try?
  4. Does anyone know where to get a sealed gel battery and are the expensive? This would at least stop the acid problem if it overheats again.
Yours Sincerely

Mr F*ckin Sick as F*ck

Halfords V High Temperature Engine Enamel Paint Matt Black 250ml from Halfords Price £5.99

for the engine

then you will need a multimeter to check the rectifier output.there should be enough information in the haynes manual to check

and about 40 quid for a battery..dont know if thats a gell filled one though

and i dont know about the suspension

Just check if the battery is being charged at more than 14.5 volts. Use an avo meter or cheap equivalent to check the charging rate at the battery terminals, above tickover speed this should be 14-14.5 volts. If rectifier is fubarred you may get a reading as high as 32 volts.

Re: Blackbird battery boiled

I think the problem is an intermittent one papasmurf because everything looks fine at the moment. A friend of mine had the same problem on his VFR 800 and had a hell of a job tracking it down but he managed to catch the rectifier playing silly buggers once but could never repeat it. He changed it and never had the problem again. I'm almost certain that this is the same fault and am looking to change it.

A rectifier is only about £30 in theM7P catalogue anyway.
I have had batteries boil dry because the vent pipe/
vent holes in the battery filler caps had become blocked.
