CG 125 - Brake issues. Hi, I have a Honda CG 125, 2000 model, imported in 2001. It has a front brake problem which yesterday caused me some problems. the front brake locks whenever you apply, whether hard or soft. i nearly crashed twice because of this stupid problem. I got new brake shoes and brake cable which are being fitted tomorrow. Do you think this will solve the problem? It is a front drum brake. Rob

Re: CG 125 - Brake issues. Hi Rob, good to see you back matey. Moved up from the scoot then? It sounds to me like there is some wear along the line, as though its not applying the brake pressure evenly. Maybe because of a slight kink in the cable or wear on the mechanism. If its any of these then the change of cable and pads could fix it. Its worthwhile checking the linkages for wear too. Hope this helps ![]()

Re: CG 125 - Brake issues. To be honest, i properly crashed for the first time yesterday because of it, i should have known better and fixed it when i had my first near-miss. The scooter failed on 7 things on MOT...but the place i went to has bad reviews from many people so i don't think that was a cleaver idea to go there. I was already told by the previous owner that the front brake shoes need replacing for the next MOT, so i may as well replace it now. I just want to fix the problem and i never want to come off again. Glad it was a 10mph "crash". Rob

Re: CG 125 - Brake issues. sounds to me like the brake linings on the shoes are worn to excess and the cam that operates them is going vertical (should never rotate that far) and therefore locking the brakes, new shoes should cure the problem.

| Re: CG 125 - Brake issues. Yeh, but when i let go of the brake lever, it didn't release, and it was still stuck on. I am assuming it is the original shoes. The main reason i chose the old style CG is because it was twin drum, and i can do 1,000kilometres in a week easy, and i was going through brake pads on my rally every 2-3months (£35 at the dealership EACH time....) | Re: CG 125 - Brake issues. the reason the lever doesn't return is because there is only a small spring on the outer of the drum to assist return if the cam has gone vertical between the shoes it's basically stuck! if your doing that kind of mileage it might be a good idea to have the inside of the drum measured to check for wear, as an oversized (worn) drum and worn down shoes will exhibit the symptom you describe. |

Re: CG 125 - Brake issues. What i mean, is that when i let the lever go, it returned, but the front brake still locked on and didnt release itself. At least i can't apply the front brake at the moment the brake lever snapped off in the crash, but that was the ONLY damage done. Rob

Re: CG 125 - Brake issues. Yeah and thats what skodaphil is describing too.... when you pull the lever this causes the brake shoes to be moved out by rotating a cam. Normally this is just fine, but if the pads are worn down, and the drum is worn too then it is possibly that when you pulled the lever the cam traveled past it normal "maximum" position, and became trapped in this over extended position. Hence when you release the lever the neither the cam or the brake shoes cannot return to their normal position, but remain locked on. I tried to find a diagram of the brake mechanism, but failed, as this would make it all so much clearer..
