Engine cut out issue..

Hey there guys, my bike went in for a service today and came out with new oil and a new spark plug. I rode it home just fine but was sat on it warming it up at home and noticed if I take the throttle from idle to full out in one blast then the engine would just cut out. I cant say if it ever did this before as I never actively tried but its slightly worrying. I can of course take it to full throttle if its got some revs going before.. I can't see how a new spark plug could have caused it though? Anyway.. anything to worry about here, or am I just being a perfectionist with the bike as per usual?

Not had a chance to ride it proper for inspection due to the weather

Re: Engine cut out issue..

this kind of symptom is usually due to engine flooding with petrol by weakened mixture. did you have a new air filter fitted? sounds to me like an air leak before the carb or could simply be an incorrectly gapped plug.

i've got corner speed, it's control i struggle with!

Re: Engine cut out issue..

It was cleaned according to the service list, I'll check it out tomorrow. What could I do about incorrectly gapped spark plug? Since that was replaced, that could well be it

Re: Engine cut out issue..

you could regap it yerself, or just take the bike back to the shop & tell em "it never did that before you serviced it"

1) purchase a set of feeler gauges (metric)
2) look in handbook, or scour the web for correct gap.. often around 0.9mm
3) remove plug
4) insert correct sized feeler gauge into gap between electrode and the little arm bit
5) if it will not go in (gap to small) then bend arm out until gap correct. (you can get a special tool ,but careful use of a flat head screwdriver normally suffices)
6) if gauge fits but is slack then bend arm in.
7) repeat 5 and 6 until gauge fits snugly.
8) refit plug and plug lead.

HTH

However to me it kinda sounds like it is sucking in air somewhere.

Re: Engine cut out issue..

Right well, it's gotten a bit worse - The engine now cuts out if you give it any throttle quickly - from idle to half a turn in one go, for example. If you do it slowly then its fine, but if you give it a blast of any size now it'll cut out... But this is ONLY when the engine is running at idle speed, and ONLY when its cold... it still does it if you open full throttle in one go no matter how long it's been running, though :?

I've not been able to find a screwdriver to get the air filter out yet.. But now that its gotten worse, I'm getting twitchy. Any suggestions guys? This has only started happening after the 'service' lately, and the only thing that got replaced was the sparkplug. The rest was just checked and cleaned...
