Top yoke/ignition barrell removal

Hi Everyone

After a recent break in and the theft of my bike keys, car and other stuff, I'm trying to get the ignition barell off my 1999 R1 to get new keys cut. As I put the steering lock on before the break in, it's stopping me from taking the top yoke off. Is there a way of getting this off without cutting the steering lock pin?

If anyone can help, it would be much appriciated.

Cheers
Pedro

Re: Top yoke/ignition barrell removal

im guessing like mine you will have shear bolts holding the barrel to the frame headstock or the yoke, if so your either gonna have to drill them out or tap them round with a centre punch, great job im sure ur gonna enjoy it not

young at heart and still faster than you

Screwdriver the lock and replace the barrel. It's no good getting another key cut if the tealeaves have got a key for it. They could come back for the bike. Did they nick the spare set of keys as well?

I would go down the new barrel route too.. Use a bit of brute force to getr the old one off, then fit the new one.

Re: Top yoke/ignition barrell removal

there is a way, but i too would buy a new lock set.

undo fork clamps and slide forks through top yoke. then undo centre steering nut, then steering lock nut and slide steering head through head stock. your top yoke will then just slide forward off the headstock and out of the steering lock catch.

but at £40 ish i would buy aftermarket barrel complete with 2 keys.

i've got corner speed, it's control i struggle with!

£40 vs bike being stolen.

Even if i had a 1977 moped i would spend the extra £40.

Cheers.

Re: Top yoke/ignition barrell removal

Hi Everyone

Thanks for your replies! I've gone down the route of a replacement lockset off ebay. Good call!!

However - as always these things are like peeling an onion, each layer adds a new tear! I've got the old one off and have plugged in the new one so I've got dash lights etc and the starter is turning, but it's not even attempting to fire the engine. It doesn't sound like an engine that hasn't been started in a couple of months, it sounds as if there's an imobilisor or something cutting the fuel supply or something similiar?????

I didn't think the '99 model had an imobilisor??????

Anyone have any ideas????

Many thanks in advance

Pedro

Re: Top yoke/ignition barrell removal

dunno GB, when questions are model/year specific like that then really the best source of info would be an R1 specific site unless someone on here has the same bike. ain't difficult to test for spark or for fuel so I'm assuming pedro's already done that

checked fuses? inc separate master fuse? if you've got a strong spark & fuel then I guess it must be an immobiliser issue
