Blackbird Rectifier

Just for your information…….

Went for a ride Saturday, stopped went to restart the bike but the Battery was flat. Bumped it with the aid of a passing biker (cheers), got it going and decided to take it home.
About a mile from home the bike sputtered and the clocks died. The engine ran on for about 300 yards then stopped.

I knew it was the rectifier as you could smell the burnt out components when I took the seat off... Pushed the bike home, I was also surprised that two car drivers stopped and offered a hand within half a mile from home…

Got it home. Removed the rectifier it was red hot and blown a hole through the front of it.
Checked the Battery which was completely flat, recharged it and the bike started and all the electrics worked (phew).

I checked the alternator output across the 3 phases and all were showing 30volts ac, hopefully this is right.

I did check the terminal connections a couple of months ago for any sign of overheating after Spree’s rectifier blew and all seemed fine!

Rang Honda for a replacement rectifier £170.00 + Vat. I can get a pattern copy for £55.00 has anyone brought one of these? as the Honda rectifier isn’t really man enough for the job anyway.

I am considering of getting an engineering company to make me up an aluminium heat sink for the new one to sit on instead of relying on the sub frame to dissipate all the heat?

Regards

Tony

Re: Blackbird Rectifier

Get the one from "Jaws" Jaws Motorcycles and Motorcycle parts supplys

Thats what was recommended to me - a lot cheaper and is supposed to work better than the original

Good service too

Re: Blackbird Rectifier

The good part was most of it was down hill.

I spoke to Jaws motorcycles and they have a replacement for around £68.00 and apparently its better than the original, they were suprised that mine had lasted this long. I also spoke to a Honda dealer who was unaware that there is an underlying problem with their Rectifiers as far as I was concerned its common news.

Cheers

Tony
