Tyre Wear

Hey guys, I ask this question because it seems downright odd to me that a new pair of tyres on my CG 125 have gone bald in just over 4.5k miles! The bike had a new pair on at 4200 miles, at 6000 miles had 4mm tread left (as observed by my mechanic) and at 8.7k miles my mechanic observed 2mm tread left, I had a look and the back tyre especially is practically bald

I mean I know they wear fast, but 4.5k miles? on a 125 engine (its not as if I have much back wheel power. Phwoar, 11bhp! ).

For the record they are Metzeler ME22s. I've just ordered a pair of Michelin Pilot Sportys to see if I can get more life out of em. =/

Surely they should last longer than this?!

Re: Tyre Wear

If most of your riding is straight line then that sounds about right. I had a back tyre on the Blackbird wear out in less than 1000 miles........

I put it on just before setting off for the IOM TT and had to change it when I got back

Re: Tyre Wear

is the wear even across the tread ? If it's just in the middle then your tyre may be over inflated, if its on the sides, under inflated.

Like Spree, I have destroyed a tyre in under 1000 miles. Wait till you have a big powerful bike and paying £100+ for a rear tyre. Oh the joys of power.

Re: Tyre Wear

The sides of the tyre have a good amount of tread left, the middle varies from being very bad but not quite bald to being almost entirely bald, it changes as you spin the tyre. This struck me as odd as well. I checked the tyre pressure and it was about 3/4psi under the recommendeds..

So 4.5k isnt bad for a 125 tyre? damn, this is one expensive hobby I'll see how the Michelin's plot out. The Metzeler ME22 was a massive improvement on the Pirelli City Demon's I had on there before

Re: Tyre Wear

Just to say, I got the Michelin Pilot Sportys today and the difference is incredible. I think I know who'll be getting my business in the future

Re: Tyre Wear

dont know about anyone else on here but i buggered a set of pirelli corsas within 50miles, bought new tyres, refitted wheels to bike, went out for a quick scrub in session, put bike away for the winter as i was going to be working away most of that winter, dragged bike out in the spring and found a huge flat spot on the rear wheel and a small flat spot on the front, if your gonna store your bike over the winter, put it on stands and keep the weight off the tyres, was not happy, but what can you do, put it down to experience, will not do it again though

young at heart and still faster than you
