Driving in france?

Hi,

I saw on the internet that you can go to plymouth to roscoff and back for only £50 return.

I was wondering whether it would be legal for me to drive in france. I have an Aprilia Rally 50 scooter, and i live near Plymouth so the trip is not far to the ferry.

I am on L-plates / provisional and it is a 50cc.

I bet people would recommend me not to drive there, but i really want to. Is it legal for me to drive in france? My insurance say i can drive in europe for a maximum of 45 days.

Rob

Re: Driving in france?

Hello and Welcome

I took the liberty of emailing the DSA as I am interested, I have no idea how long it might take them to reply, you might want to call them.

email address for the DVLA and DSA are below

drivers.dvla@gtnet.gov.uk Telephone: 0870 240 0009

cbt@dsa.gsi.gov.uk Phone: 0115 936 6547

Hope this helps

Richard

Re: Driving in france?

Hi.

Thanks for the help and information. I have already searched a few biker forums, and i have also searched on the direct.gov.uk site, and there is no information about 50cc scooters driving in france.

Some places in europe do have their scooters registered to an address rather than a person, and some places in europe you do not have to wear a helmet, but i think that is only for the scooters registered in that country.

Im a bit of a travaller, i sortof lied a bit, i live in Penzance which is about 70miles away from plymouth, but i have driven there 3 tiimes before. The furthest i have driven is exeter which is about 100 miles away from where i live.

I purchased my bike Febuary 2007 with 12,250 on the clock, i now have 43,400 on the clock. (13-14months of ownership)

Re: Driving in france?

Add 2 miles to that because i live on the outskirts of Penzance about 7 miles from Lands End.

And i am not exactly bothered to be honest, 90miles is nothing to me, i have done 700kilometres in the last 5 days...lol

Yeh ive checked my insurance details, i am allowed to drive in Europe for 45 days maximum. The problem is licences not insurances.

Thanks for trying to help.

Rob

Edit: 81.6miles - the quickest route.

fromenzance, tr18 to:A390 @50.263876, -5.104176 to:A390 @50.313180, -4.858380 to:Unknown road @50.335360, -4.775950 to:A390/Church St @50.360080, -4.717140 to:A390 @50.388110, -4.698330 to:A390/Liddicoat Rd @50.410060, -4.667900 to:A390 @50.427884,

83.5miles = the safer route.

Re: Driving in france?

Evening all

Below is the response I got from the DVLA on the matter. I am a little gob smacked but not entirely surprised!

Richard

Thank you for your email.

DVLA is unable to comment on driving in other countries.

It would be advisable for you to contact your Insurance Company

Hi There, I have recently passed my CBT, does this allow me ride on roads in Europe if I had appropriate insurance etc?
