anybody recommend a 125 scooter?

Hi, I´m looking to buy a used 4 stroke 125 scooter but am confused by the choice.
If anybody out there has any recommendations and/or buying tips I would be very grateful.

I need it for nipping into town (2 up) to save on parking costs and to avoid some of the short trips in the car, and for the odd shortish pleasure ride.
Requirements
-bigger than a 50cc with good pillion seat for a nervous pillion (the wife)
-something well engineered and reliable that won´t rust prematurely.
-good economy and decent power.

I have a budget of 1,000 pound- can I get something decent for this money?

Thanks in advance for any tips,
Mike.

Re: anybody recommend a 125 scooter?

i am beggining to notice that not many people on the forum give straight answers but you all seem to avoid the question...kinda like politicians do, just wondering how many MP bikers are on here???

now im going to do exactly the same thing as everyone else and just give you advice :P

i wouldnt get a moped personally i would say to get a proper bike with some power behind it, but when buying a moped you should probably get it checked over by you and your wife to make sure you can both sit comftably on it.

Re: anybody recommend a 125 scooter?

It isn't the case that we don't give straight answers. When asking for a recommendation for any bike or scooter you really need to have experience of one. My scooter experience is limited to Lambrettas and Vespa's from the late seventies and since I got a bike I would never go back to one. So there is no point in me personally vouching for any of them.

The people that have responded to this question and some others have at least tried to point the person in the right direction, besides the question was pretty specific - most bikers would probably say "forget the scooter and get a bike" but haven't done because of the specific request for help.

And one other thing, theres definitely no politicians on here you cheeky twat - can you imagine the leader of the house of commons calling you that

Re: anybody recommend a 125 scooter?

soz i didnt reply - its simply i know nothing about scooters and cant ride them .... every time i tried to go round a corner by steering with my knee pushed against the tank (which wasnt there), i turned sideways and fell off.

But gotta agree with Spree - you really cant go wrong with a Honda

The last time I rode anything like a scooter was a Honda 50 step through 40 years ago. I assume the similar bike Honda produce today is just as bomb proof.

Re: anybody recommend a 125 scooter?

Just been wandering round the honda dealers and whilst waiting around for my bike, which isnt ready so Ive got a CBF1000A demo for the weekend he he, I was looking at honda scooters.

Try looking for your local Honda dealers on the internet or here ....
Honda Scooters Motorcycles .....

and if you see anything you like, check out second hand dealers .

Good luck and let us know how you get on please

If you are going to have a pillion quite often, you need more of a cruiser type scooter. I used to have a Piaggio X9. Very big seat, very comfy, has a radio, plenty of room under the seat, power point and like all piaggio big scoots, has a rather handy shopping bag loop at the front, ( I had a top box as well and used to do a full weeks shop on it ). I had the 460cc version, but the 125 also got good reviews. There's also a Suzuki burgman 125, but they're more expensive.
The best thing you can do if you have no idea what you're after, is buy a scooter mag. 'Twist&Go' is a particularly good mag for modern scooters, haven't read it since I got into bikes a few years ago, but it used to have a brief review of all scooters currently for sale at the back. 'Scootering' covers some modern scoots, but also Vespas and Lambrettas etc. If you're not taking the wife too often then you may be better off with a sportier scoot, Gilera Runner 125, Peaugot Speedfight 100 etc. Check out rough prices at 'Parkers' bike price guide.
I had many happy years on scoots, and were it not for having a go on a sportsbike, I'd still be on them now.
I think I may have spelled Peaugot wrong, Puegoet, Peugout..................Anyone???? I'd google it but it's late and I'm off to bed!
