Hi Dave and welcome to the forum

The first thing you have to do is a CBT (Compulsory Bike Training) you can read about it here About compulsory basic training (CBT)

The second thing is get some insurence!

then have a look around the forums and you may find the new rider section interesting New rider information - The Biker Forum

Re: new rider

You have to complete a CBT before you can ride on the road, then you can ride for 2 years on L plates before you have to do it again. Rules for bike instruction are possibly going to change in September so best to get on with it.
There are some good deals on courses. Have a look on Fawcetts Motorcycle Training website. Passed my test with them. They are really friendly and can give you some advice on what to do next.
