| Average mileage? Hi everyone This may seem like a really daft question but what the hell ! ![]() What is the average mileage for a bike? For instance I know that for a car they say that 10,000 - 12,000 is the average yearly mileage. Is it considered the same for a bike? I'm sure I remember someone telling me years ago that it is less for a bike. I will be buying a used bike in the next few months and want to make sure I know what I'm looking for in terms of mileage. Cheers Kenny |

| Re: Average mileage? I do about 9,000 - 10,000 a year but that’s all pleasure riding, some on here like Blackpanther use theirs for work so may be higher although I think his bike is mainly used for work. Bare this in mind if its a smaller CC bike like 50cc or 125cc then expect lower overaul mileage, remember these see all the same hills as the bigger machines and try a lot harder to get up them, so may get kn*ckered a lot sooner. Most bikes out there these days are pretty well engineered and do very high mileage without any problem. Many go well over the 100,000 mark with minimal servicing, just watch out for excessive oil burning (Smokey) engines, probable cause valve stems, excessive knocking (big or little end) 'can be expensive to repair' also whining clunky clutches, and make sure no jumping out of any gear. Also before buying may be a good idea to do Vehicle check on your intended purchase, there are many organisations that do it on line now with a nominal fee (AA for instance) or even by a texting phone putting in the registration number. | Re: Average mileage? I'd be looking to get something no bigger than a 650cc, my plan is to do DAS and get a reasonable cheap-ish bike for a year or two before moving onto something newer and possibly bigger depending on how I progress. Well that seems simple enough, mileage sounds similar to cars (depending on what they are used for) so I shall keep my beady eye open for a bargain! ![]() |

Most 600cc and over Japanese Bikes and BMWs manufactured after 1990 have engines that do well over 100000 miles if the oil is changed regularly and the bike has been serviced properly. (I know of one K75S BMW that has done 300000 plus miles and has never has a major item on the engine go wrong.) Mileage really is not an issue these days, a properly serviced bike is the important factor. | |

| Re: Average mileage? I do around 12,000 miles a year, which is astronomical compared to what some bikes do. I'd say the average is around 3,000 miles per year. This varies greatly depending on the bike ( Blackbirds/Pans/big bms etc tend to get used all days, all weathers, a ZX6R/R6/GSXR maybe just at the weekends ). Best bet is just have a look at different model bikes for sale, check out the mileages and you'll soon recognise what is a high miler for a particular bike. Oh and Rocks, just 10,000 miles, surely you do more than that! ( Or is that 10,000 on each bike?? ) ![]() |
