car driver considering jumping

Hi All

Brand spanking new to the forum and to bikes. Been a car driver since the age of 17, never been near a bike for a good reason. My uncle was killed on one when he was 26 yrs old (well before my time) so bikes have always had a dark cloud hanging over them. Well I am 32yrs old this month and have now moved to London....and the appeal of a bike is becoming very clear.....as I slowly edge my way through london traffic!!!! I commute on the train 5 days a week (oh joy!) but still use the car at weekends (visiting friends etc). I love my driving and I love the car but these days its become a chore more than a joy...where has all the fun of driving gone!?!?!?!? I have had a poke around this site and am seriously considering a bike rather than using the car (although I would still keep it for obvious reasons)... but insurance quotes seem to come back at silly prices (probably due to my total lack of experince) and obviously my uncle's death still clouds my judgment..Not sure what i'm really hoping with this post...but am totally confused as to where to go next. Should I do CBT & DAS only to find that biking isn't for me... typically now I find out they will make the test harder in October!!! just how much harder is it going to be??

not sure if there was a question in there or just a confused rant butall opinions welcome...
TIA
andrew

just book a CBT and see how you feel afterwards - odds on you'll love the experience and never look back (except when yer supposed to of course)

Greetings Andrew and welcome to the forum

Forget about the test! Your priority should be finding out if your going to enjoy riding or even if you want to ride!

Forget about insurance quotes, if they are 'silly prices' what exactly are you getting quotes on?

Before you do anything, go and do a CBT. That way you'll be able to judge if biking is for you or not before you spend any serious money on a bike and gear etc.

Accidents happen so get your head round the dangers of riding. As you said you've been poking around you will have seen some posts regarding this, if you haven't seen them yet, then read them carefully when you find them.

Re: car driver considering jumping

Hi Deano & Grotbag

Thanks for the advice.... TBH, the quotes were on bikes that were..... 'quite' fast....so probably not a good place to start, although if I did join the biking fraternity I wouldn't want anything too small....

The CBT it is then...are there classes for people of a more mature age only? I get the feeling I could be surrounded by lots of 16yr olds otherwise...not that I've got anything against them other than embarrasment when I fall off!! am in Surbiton so not sure if people can recommend stuff on here but would be appreciated if I could be pointed in the right direction...

Thanks again guys
andrew

Motorcycle training centres in Surrey

very unlikely you'd be surrounded by youngsters Peter, in fact you'll very probably be one of the younger trainees

Hi Andrew,

Sounds like you're half way there Like others have said, do the CBT and see what you think of it. If you like it then you can start to think about a test. Insurance quotes tend to drop as your age rises. You may not have crossed the old git line yet so may have to splash a few more notes compared with those that have

HTH

Hey you!!! I did my CBT at 51 with 2 x older but still younger than me peeps and 2 x 16 year olds on twist n goes in torrential rain, came off 3 times, got bluddy el she's getting back on (and again and again) looks from em all and passed!

Just bear in mind that you're hardly likely to see these people again and they are in exactly the same boat as you.

Just go and enjoy it, the instructors won't ask you to do anything if they feel your not ready and will let you have more practice.

Hiya Andrew

I did my CBT in the snow with 2 young twist and goes and an older lady thought that it wasn't for me at the time but carried on did the full das mainly to prove a point I think ??? but it was the best thing I did I've still got the smile on my face and now I've got my own bike (I still class myself as a learner by the way) there's no stopping me my mate was knocked off and badly injured in my first week of lessons but thought how many people are injured in cars and it didn't stop me driving so good luck in what you decide and keep it shiny side up
