What's wrong with a 250?

I'm doing my DAS and test in September and now starting to think about what size/type of bike to get. One thing I've noticed is that most people seem to talk about getting a 500+ bike as their first bike and I'd be interested to know why people don't consider something like a 250 more as a first bike to gain experience before moving onto something bigger? I've never been on a 250 so I'm curious- perhaps the relatively low power compared to a bigger bike becomes a problem?
I've also noticed that there doesn't seem to be that many 250s available second hand (especially in dealers)

theres absolutely nothing wrong with a 250,but you will soon get bored with it. a 500/600cc machine will bimble along at 60 or 70mph easier than a 250 can blast along at 130mph

Nothing wrong with a 250, but as you have noticed not a huge range of chioce. I think it's a great idea to get some experience on a smaller machine before going out and buying something that can do 160mph

Re: What's wrong with a 250?

with the changing learner rules, there are a few 250's being released now, i personally enjoy riding smaller bikes any way, more satisfaction i find.
there is a huge range of 250/400 bikes from japan and yes a 400 import will do 130mph derestricted (not that speeding is a good thing you understand )
you've got sports, commuters, retro, touring in the 400 range and a few in the 250's. remember the six point rule apply's to all new licence holders!!

i've got corner speed, it's control i struggle with!

Re: What's wrong with a 250?

There's nothing wrong with a 250 mate, the main problem being lack of choice due to the changes in the bike licence in the 80's, they fell from favour in this country.

A 500 or 600 isn't too much bigger but the benefits can be great
  • Less strain on the engine for the same speed
  • Better braking
  • Physically bigger so makes a more effective presence on the road
  • Easier to ride on motorways/dual carriage ways
  • Better carrying a pillion if needed
  • Will carry more luggage for touring
The list goes on and on but at the end of the day its all down to personal preference Catcher

Re: What's wrong with a 250?

i used to have a rgv 250 years ago, loved it, well i did when it ran and was not in bits having the engine rebuilt again, nothing wrong with a 250, as for ur first bike, everyone will go for something different and remember a big bike can be ridden just as slow as a small bike, you control the throttle not the bike

young at heart and still faster than you

Re: What's wrong with a 250?

Hi Grotbag - thanks for asking!
I'm due to start my DAS on 22 Sept - now starting to get excited (and a little nervous!). As it's a while since my CBT and no practice since, I've booked a few hours practice on Sunday, just to get the feel of it again. I should then be more prepared for the DAS.
I just hope the weather holds!
I don't mind the rain up to a point - in fact, I'd welcome the opportunity to practice in the rain as I think it would help boost confidence and if it's then raining on the test I won't be as worried!
Thinking about my question above, I'm thinking along the lines of a 250 as I think it will suit my needs, for the time being at least.
I'll keep you informed.
Regards
Catcher
