Test Help Needed! Traffic Lights

Hi Newbee Here,

I have my test on thursday, and have a question i need help on, When i come to traffic lights on RED i know i should get the bike into neutral, but my question is :

1) do i put left foot down and cover brake with right foot (bike is in neutral)(front brake holding bike)

2)do i put both feet down, holding front brake. (bike is in neutral)

The problem im getting is if i use method 1, by the time i have switched feet to put bike in gear and then returned the foot to cover the right brake and done my observations, i seem to be holding up traffic.

or can you just leave the bike in gear and just put left foot down and cover brake woth right.

Thanks for your advice in advance.

Hi leighcurtis

I think it would be a good idea to get a couple of lessons because from time to time the examiners look for different ways of doing things. You need to know which is PC at present (it'll change within a couple of years).
You have already found one area where something could be done in at least two different ways. Any is fine in the real world but you've got to do what officialdom wants in your test.

Good luck with it.

Re: Test Help Needed! Traffic Lights

I'd advise you to do what you've been doing for the last 6 years TBH

As you've less than a week to get used to doing it a different way to what your used to may be, I would have though you'd stand more chance of fluffing it on the day

See what some of the others think when they pop in, in the mean time would you open up a thread in the new members forum and introduce yourself so peeps can say ello to you?

Re: Test Help Needed! Traffic Lights

ditto, "safety position" is as Sam said....

reason being is a cage pilot decides to overtake you.....or when there is oncoming traffic your foot is out his way and less chance of getting it crushed.....and covering the back brake can also help stabalise the bike as well

apparently it also called The Hendon Shuffle

Riding Skills

having said that, im not sure if its marked on the exam

update === you MUST cover the back brake or its a test fail

Which foot to use to support the bike when stationary

When we are stopped at traffic lights or are waiting for traffic to clear then we have to support the bike with either the left or right foot on the ground. The mechanically sympathetic biker will also have engaged neutral and released the clutch lever so as to reduce wear and tear on the clutch linkage. The poser may also wish to adjust the angle of his shades with his/her left hand!

Ok, so which foot to use?

Here in the UK, learner riders are instructed to use the left foot to support the bike while the right foot is covering/applying the rear brake. This is a mandatory technique in order to pass the UK Riding Test.

Re: Test Help Needed! Traffic Lights

I agree with Sam & Eddie - you must come to the stop line in 1st gear, right foot on brake and left foot down, then you're good to go as soon as the lights change and the way is clear, no holdups. That position is also very stable.
Take care if the ground is sloping away right or left, and watch your position for whichever way you are turning (I assume you know the correct position to place the bike in?)
Take the advice given previously and book a bit of instruction, so that you can go over exactly what the examiners are looking for, also they should iron out any bad habits you might have picked up in the years you have been riding.
Keep calm, pay attention to exactly what they ask you to do and you'll sail through it.

If you look in the New rider information - The Biker Forum eddie, I think you'll find most of it's already in there, including a The DSA fail sheet (How to Fail your Motorcycle Test!).

I agree, leigh if you read some account of members test's you'll see that different examiners pick up on different things although it's supposed to be the same test.

You must have done a few CBT day's to be riding for 6 years, think back to instructions given to you before you went out on the road and via the head set when dealing with traffic lights ..........those instructors will know what examiners in that location are likely to pick up on.
