Newbie plus pillion question. Hi, Just wanted to say hello. I've been riding a ickle GS125 almost daily since September 07, except for February when it got a bit too icy for my liking. My poor car feels so neglected but the bike wins everytime cuz it's more fun (and goes for miles on a thimble of juice!). I passed my big bike test last Tuesday but won't be getting a new bike for a while because I'm saving for a wedding. It's still nice to lose the L-plates though. When I do get a big bike my lady would love to get on the back. Just wondering how experienced you need to be to take a pillion? She thinks I need to have been riding for a year before I'll be save enough. Ash.

Re: Newbie plus pillion question. Welcome argila and well done for passing! ![]() I'd say it'e each to their own. I went pillion with Mr Lady Clara only a couple of months after he passed as he felt comfortable and confident enough. It was fine and we had no mishaps. I passed 8 months ago and haven't taken anyone pillion yet. I would probably feel ready now but am in no rush. I'd say if you're still riding your 125 and feel confident on it there's no need to wait for a year. Just do what you did when you were learning (or what I did anyway), go to a car park or industrial estate with your Mrs following in the car. Have a go with her on and see how it feels before you go on the road. Good luck. ![]()

Re: Newbie plus pillion question. Ive been riding for the past 15years only thing ive found carry a pillion is if there unsure and don't feel safe it can make your bike very unstable so its just case of taking things slow and easy untill you both feel comfortable and confident then you can start upping the pace

Re: Newbie plus pillion question. Hi Ash and welcome to the biker forum mate. Pillion riding takes a while to master properly. I would take her out on a couple of nice easy short trips first giving her a taste of all sorts of roads to see how she takes to it. Remember though, your braking and handling is going to be affected by more than you think so just take it steady until you get the hang of it.

Re: Newbie plus pillion question. hello ash welcome to the forum and congratulations on passing the test..i dont normally carry pillions, the few times i did it i was very concious of keeping everything smooth and predictable and my pillion was so good if it hadnt been for the loss of a bit acceleration i wouldnt have known he was there, i would say when you feel confident enough to do it then you will be ready, just take things nice and easy and everything will be fine.............................Sam

Re: Newbie plus pillion question. Hi there... For years I had no car, and Mrs Wombat and I went everywhere by bike.. Including doing the weekly shop on my faithful XJ6, complete with ruck sacks, soft panniers, etc... and even once a paddock stand perched between us... Carrying a pillion is on the whole fun.. Start off if you can with a friend who has experience riding pillion... that will help you build your confidence, as you can concentrate on yourself and not worry to much about them..

Re: Newbie plus pillion question. Thanks for the replies. I think she's going to have a go on the back of the 125. It'll just be for a laugh though, wouldn't want to go very far because it's slow enough with just me on it. It's still good practise for when I get a big bike. Ash.
