New Boy Seeks Advice...

Hi

I'm H - or climberowl, if you prefer. I'm a forty three year old newcomer, having got fed up of cars (911, 944, Z4 etc). Trouble is, my master plan of CBT - Intensive Course - Test - Big Bastard Bike has had to be reengineered due to the self evident fact that I am simply not a NATURAL. I discovered this in a Scunthorpe car park last week when I failed to follow the simple instruction to "drive in a straight line" preferring,it seems, to do a perfect diaganol. This was swiftly followed by me placing the bike on my head following an emergency stop which included a throttle turn and a clutch release. My first biking accident and CBT successfully completed I have decided to modify plans and spend the summer learning the basic craft on a 125. Trouble is, what do I get? I'm a biggish lad and really don't want to look like a complete nob even before I've set off, so as big a looking bike as possible, I reckon... Any ideas?

Don't worry about it, neither am I, (you can read about my escapades here :How many times to pass a bike test? post number 105).

The guys will be along to give you some good ideas soon. But remember whatever you decide on that you need to sit on it and have a test ride on it before you buy!

Hello and welcome,
I would say your best option would be a trail style bike, Honda Vara, Suzuki DR or Yamaha do a couple (DT and XT) they are all fairly tall machines.
Go around a few dealers and have a sit

Re: New Boy Seeks Advice...

Hi and welcome. Good to see you here

The Varadero 125 is a big bike and you would be ok with it. We have the big version and it's lovely.

Don't despair that it didn't come easily - I thought I would get on my NSR 125and it would be a breeze Ha Ha. After dropping it twice on my CBT and scraping the fairing (I did still pass though - think my instructor was being generous that day) I went out the next day with the lads after being advised not to - gave it a fistful of front brake and stuffed it into a lampost, smashing the front end to pieces.

Decided to spend two years on my 125 before I got something bigger - I definitely needed the experience. Keep at it.

Re: New Boy Seeks Advice...

Hi There rv 57 gaz

Glad I'm not the only one to do a spot of crashing on my cbt... maybe we could form a breakaway club of really shite bikers! Fabulous! God, I looked at the Varadero 125 yesterday - even sat on it! Thing is, I'm kinda caught between two stools, on the one hand thinking it would be great if a Direct Access pass is a while away, but not so great if I get confident and competent quite quickly. Jesus, I feel like a kiddie in a sweet shop! Then again, that trialsy looking Honda doesn't look too bad either...
