I'm not encourging you to lie to your parents, but as every NON biker will tell you a horror story and tell you how your stupid to do it (it is dangerous, but just be careful) this is a tough thing to convince people who love you to let you do

Dodgy ground, very dodgy ground. You can tell you're not a parent. Your day will come and this is not advice you will ever give your children

Sorry forget the most important bit. Hello Athram and welcome.... be wary of dodgy advice

Re: Hello!

When I told my dad I was going to take riding lessons he banned me!!

That was around Christmas time (I'm 51 and he's 72). I told him that I was going to do it with or without his support as I considered myself old enough to decide for myself

He's never like bikes much or bikers as he grew up in the 'Mods & Rockers' era and I haven't got round to telling him that I have my own bike yet so I'll be expecting another ear bashing when I finally own up to it

My point is, that parent worry about their children, regardless of how old they are or how old they become, Once a parent your ALWAYS a parent. You need to talk to them honestly - they could surprise you by their response!

Some time's my mind doesn't only wander, it leaves completely ...........

Re: Hello!

My dad was always OK with me riding bikes, but my Mum was dead set against it. Unfortunately for her all my friends were of the leather Jacket with demin cut off variety, (as was I), and all had bikes.. I started going out on the back of them, most of the time she did not know, and when she found out she would go mad...

However I then started working with one of them and I would get a lift to work on the back of his GS550..What could she say?? Can't complain about going on a bike if It was back and to to work eh?

From there it was a short hop to acceptance, and doing my tests...Mind you I had moved out when I got my first bike, but at least I never got nagged..

Well that was until this summer, and now "grandma" is not exactly over the moon about me taking my little girl out with me.. but she'll get over it

Oh dear......I did the same as Andy. And I'm a mother. And I'm 35. Therefore I must be a very bad person. Don't listen to us Athram we're bad.
p.s. Welcome

Re: Hello!

if your dad is against you having a bike it's probably because he loves you and he's worried. i asked my boy when he was 16 if he wanted a moped, he said no I'll wait and get a car and to be honest I was relieved.
I had to tell my parents at 17 I was joining the Army and would be in Northern Ireland within the year, At one time I also had to tell them my new girlfriend was black (back in the days of ignorance). I can see both points of view but at the end of the day your old enough to make your mind up and I'm sure your dad will accept it in time. Good luck mate.

Re: Hello!

The proof is in the pudding. You need to prove to your parents that your responsible and will take biking responsibly. Show them all the safety gear and the reflective stripes.

Then go and pull a big wheelie as you leave!! ;-)

I think your right there, Singh, id make sure they knew you were taking everything seriously and knew all the risks, but dont tell them the really bad things, just the "yes i know if i fall off i might get hurt but im taking every precaution not to, i.e. helmet, Gloves, etc)" and say your going to wear all the reflective stripes so your safer and then and just tell them its something you really want to do so sooner or later you will do it!

I told my old man and he was well up for it, he even paid for it, done my cbt, then we told my mum!!!! haha, that was a funny dinner at the table!! then as it was already paid for she couldnt stop me doing my test a couple of weeks later! but thats my 'rents for you, not everyones the same.
oh and when i told the old girl i was getting a bike i said that over tea at the table and she couldnt really shout at me as my gf was there, so she just give me the biggest "your dead" look!! great fun at tea time in my family!

oh and welcome! i was rambling so much i forgot! lol

TRUST ME.......Im a Gynaecologist!
