Learner Bike Riders FAQs

1. I want to take a motorcycle test and I already hold a full car licence. Do I need to take a theory test?

Yes.
Your car licence does not exempt you from taking the motorcycle theory test.

2. What is the minimum age to ride a moped?

The minimum age to ride a moped is 16.

3. What is the minimum age to ride a motorcycle?

The minimum age is 17.

4. What will my examiner want from me?

Your examiner will want you to ride safely and competently in various road and traffic conditions. The examiner will give you clear directions in good time, and will ask you to carry out set exercises.

5. What are provisional licence conditions?

As a provisional licence holder you are restricted to a maximum speed limit of 45 mph and you must display L-plates on the front and rear of your machine. You are also not allowed to drive on a motorway.

6. What documents do I need to take to the practical test?

You will need to take both your photo card licence and paper counterpart to the test centre. If you lost or misplaced your licence or you have a GB old style paper licence, issued from 1 November 2005, you will need to produce alternative evidence of identity

* A Passport
* A cheque guarantee card or credit card bearing your photograph & signature
* An employer's identity card bearing your photograph & signature
* A trade union card bearing your photograph & signature
* A photograph of you which has been endorsed by an 'acceptable person'

You will also require the following:

* a road worthiness certificate - MOT (if applicable)a tax disc displayed on your machine
* your theory test certificate

If you do not have the correct documents your test may not proceed.

7. What if I can't find my driving licence ?

If you misplace your licence you must apply for a replacement from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland (DVLNI), which could take up to 15 days. If this happens, you may have to re-arrange your test.

REMEMBER: No licence, no photo, no test!
