Xubuntu - No more XP

Bit of geek speak now.

I was on windows XP.

I am now going onto Xubuntu

Xubuntu is based on Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is based on Debian

And Xubuntu is linux.

It is amazing, it is nearly as good as windows but without gaming support and without threats of viruses.

I am enjoying linux so much, it is better than 4 years when i first tried it out.

Re: Xubuntu - No more XP

I've moved this into the PC forum Rob

I agree that most distributions of Linux have improved massively over the last few years but you still need a fair knowledge of Linux for quite a few simple tasks, nearly but not quite ready for the ordinary user.

In my opinion

I don't care

I switch on, it works and it's never ever broken in over 2 years. (Last version of XP, specifically asked NOT for vista when I bought it.)

Wise move Mike

I do hope that they can eventually release a version of Linux for the ordinary user as a little more competition for Microsoft wouldn't be a bad thing at all.

Its true that some peripherals do have driver issues.

My old printer won't work with xubuntu, but my scanner will.

My exturnal hard drive...well i don't know yet.

Same here, just bought a new laptop and insisted on XP Pro rather than Vista - better the devil you know..............

Re: Xubuntu - No more XP

We did a trial at work - we were trying to prove the concept of a "free" PC. I know there is no such thing as a free PC but the closest to 0 pounds as possible.

We installed Ubuntu with Open Office - it worked a treat - until you start dealing with the real world. Even though Open Office is compatible with MS Office it is not the other way round. Both suppliers and customers complained about not being able to open quotes and attachments, even though we saved as MS Office format.

Also users are so indoctrinated by XP they liked the Ubuntu interface - but still preferred XP. Weird.

I agree free Linux OS are pretty much ready to go - just need the marketing push now....

I like linux so much i aint going back to windows. The only thing i miss is this: SA-MP San Andreas Multiplayer mod for Grand Theft Auto (GTA SA)

Apart from that, all is good.
