windows problem

tried to fire up the pc this morning and got the message .., windows/system32/sysconfig missing.. this file may be missing or corrupt.. the file can be repaired by running your windows startup disc and pressing r at the first screen

i tried that , but the n it asked for a floppy disc.. i didnt have one , so reinstalled windows on top ,of the windows that was already on the hard drive. the pc is now working but my anti virus wont run because i seem to have lost service packs 1 and 2, and as my windows "COPY" is ancient i cant get the m from the disc is there any way to get them without going to the microsoft site as i dont want the cheeky reminder thingy that they give you for having a non valid copy of windows.. or would i be as well to scrub the drive and start again.. sometimes i hate computers

Re: windows problem

There is sooooooo much you can do

But I cannot put it up on this site or it could get shut down

Actually there is something easy you can do.

go to c:\windows\system32 (on the old copy of windows which I assume you still have)
copy wpa.dbl and wpa.bak to a floppy or pen drive (USB stick)
Reinstall XP (which you have already done)
Decline activation request
Reboot into safe mode (on the new installed windows)
go to c:\windows\system32
rename wpa.dbl to wpadbl.new (if it exists)
rename wpa.bak to wpabak.new (if it exists)
copy the original wpa.dbl and wpa.bak that you have on the floppy or USB stick to c:\windows\system32
restart windows

voila

Re: windows problem

Backup everything on the computer and wipe it. A reinstall/recovered windows isnt really any good for the old programs that were on the computer all the registry is missing. You have to re enable all your licenses etc. Plus a few other things. IF you reinstall windows your looking for Windows xp pro sp2 inc corporate. Make sure its corporate doesnt need activating no fannying around. If you cant find it mate msg me.
