Re: open office

FWIW Open office is excellent, I use it exclusively, with the only issues being ones of microsofts making.

The reason some people get simple formatting errors when opening a .doc which was created on MS word is because MS do not save thier files in a totally standards compliant way, but Ooo opens them in the standard compliant manner.

The problem is one way only, and rather than running down Ooo people should complain to MS. Not that they would take any notice.

Re: open office

I totally agree with you jonny, theres no doubt in my mind that the issues are all microsofts end but with so many companies/people using MS Office its always going to be an issue.

its not a case of if it aint broke dont fix it, more like if it makes a fortune dont fix it!

Well I'll keep flying the flag for FOSS, and if I convert a few along the way then great.

Mind you it's an uphill struggle, just reading this article shows the mindset that FOSS has to overcome!!

Re: open office

hee hee - you can't beat old MS and their borg mentality - mind you its kept me in a job for 15 years!!

We did a trial here at work - the trial was to see if we could get a truely free PC - free OS and Free Office Apps. It worked great as a standalone m/c. However the reality is that there are alot of MS pc's out there and exchanging files and info (as you do in the real world) between business partners was somewhat hit and miss.

I truely think educ/public sector should lead the way and then the rest will follow.
