This isn't the usual 'how do i use 100% of the tyre' question but more geometry/physics, i think

Normally you see rear tyres with smaller strips than the front tyres, so my question is why? What causes this?

My reason for asking is because I'm the other way round, my front tyre is scrubbed up the the edges but my rear isn't. I'm not asking because i particularly want to use all the rear tyre, but I'm curious why and if my bike/suspension etc is badly setup

If nothing else, hopefully this should be a good discussion topic!!

For a lot of bike the geometry and the profile of the front tyre are limiting features. What profile is your front tyre?

Front tyre has a steeper profile.

If you used the last few mm of tread on the back you'd use double that on the front due to the steep sides but you'd never use all of it.

In short, it's meant to be that way.

Maybe your ride has different frame angles. Just fitted Mich. PR4's (100 miles back) and chicken strip about 1/4 inch off wall, front shows no signs of wear yet.
Love the tyres, expensive but best yet.

Gotta scrub them in for Brittany.http://www.bikerforum.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/dirol.gif

Tyres are pretty standard, top of my head, 120/70/17 and 180/55/17

Simple answer then!
